Strawberries and Slugs!!/

This is all I got from the small vegetable garden around the house this morning.

I have to harvest them before they become fully matured. Otherwise, the slugs will eat them! I have to consider ways to keep away those pests. I have done a quick search, and I have found beer, coffee, and coffee grounds are suggested among others. I think I'll try coffee grounds first.

Kounago-and-Sweet Potato Kakiage/

As I said previously, kounago refers to young ikanago (Ammodytes personatus Girard). Today, I found this kakiage sold for 80 yen per piece at the local supermarket I frequent, and I just had to buy four pieces for my family. The combination of kounago and sweet potato sounded so appetizing to me!

Harumaki (Spring Rolls)/

Harumaki (spring rolls) are not a traditional Japanese dish, but are popular in Japan. My wife made harumaki for supper tonight.
Typical ingredients include shiitake mushrooms and bamboo shoots, but this time, she used cabbage, harusame noodles, and ground pork only.

Nothing like home-made, crispy, and very stuffed harumaki!

Slender bamboo shoots called nemagari take are a delicacy that can be savored only around this time of year. They are good in simmered dishes and miso soup, but I like them simply grilled with skin on.

I peeled them and had them with mayo and ponzu.

Komatsuna in My Vegetable Garden/

Today, I harvested some komatsuna from a very small (90 x 90 cm) garden box placed in my yard.

I put it in miso soup, together with abura age.

Supper on May 23/5月23日の夕食

For supper tonight, I made yakisoba. I like to add a lot of vegetables, and this time, I added moyashi (bean sprouts), carrots, and cabbage. For meat, I used pork. And, I like to put a lot of pickled red ginger (beni shoga) and ao nori (a type of seaweed) on top of it before eating.
I really, really hate the type of yakisoba sold at food stalls, which seemingly contains only a few strips of cabbage!

What to Do with Mizuna/

For lunch today, I made chahan (stir-fried rice) very quickly, using eggs, fake crab meat, and leftover onion slices.

We had a problem: What to do with the mizuna that sat in the fridge for days. My wife solved the problem by making two dishes for supper tonight.

My wife also made miso soup with wakame and enoki.

Like most Japanese, we almost always have miso soup for every rice-centered meal.

Supper on May 21/5月21日の夕食

For supper last night, my wife "grilled" some capelin in the toaster oven. In Japan, capelin are usually sold under the false name of shishamo.
I have never had real shishamo in my life!

And, for supper tonight, my wife made daikon kinpira. The ingredients are daikon, carrots, and satsuma age (a type of fish paste). She seasoned it with sugar first, added some sake and put on the lid to "steam" it, and then added soy sauce. Finally, she added mirin to give it luster.

Another side dish was onion slices. We had it with ponzu and mayonnaise, as usual.

We also had this dish, daikon leaf goma ae (boiled daikon leaves dressed with ground sesame seeds, etc.), which I made this morning.

It may not look yummy, but it is. My son likes it very much.
We also had leftover grilled capelin. You can see some roe in this photo.

And, tonight's main dish is inada sashimi!

Inada refers to young and small yellowtail (less fatty), younger than hamachi (young yellowtail) and buri (adult yellowtail). The term hamachi can also refer to cultured adult yellowtail.

Sorry for the Long Absence/

I can't believe that I haven't updated this blog for more than one month! For one thing, I'm no longer the main cook in the house, and for another, my digital camera broke! I had to buy a new camera, and just when I was updating this blog, I came down with a cold! Anyway, let me update this blog with some photos of my rented farm.
